A concise, brilliant, and trenchant examination of Democratic Nominee Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s lifelong quest for the presidency by National Book Award winner Evan Osnos, adapted from nearly a decade of his reporting for The New Yorker.
Former vice president Joseph R. Biden Jr. has been called both the luckiest man and the unluckiest—fortunate to have sustained a fifty-year political career that reached the White House, but also marked by deep personal losses and disappointments that he has suffered.
Yet even as Biden’s life has been shaped by drama, it has also been powered by a willingness, rare at the top ranks of politics, to confront his shortcomings, errors, and reversals of fortune. As he says, “Failure at some point in your life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable.” His trials have forged in him a deep empathy for others in hardship—an essential quality as he addresses Americans in the nation’s most dire hour in decades.
Blending up-close journalism and broader context, Evan Osnos, who won the National Book Award in 2014, draws on his work for The New Yorker to capture the characters and meaning of an extraordinary presidential election. It is based on lengthy interviews with Biden and on revealing conversations with more than a hundred others, including President Barack Obama, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, and a range of progressive activists, advisers, opponents, and Biden family members.
This portrayal illuminates Biden’s long and eventful career in the Senate, his eight years as Obama’s vice president, his sojourn in the political wilderness after being passed over for Hillary Clinton in 2016, his decision to challenge Donald Trump for the presidency, and his choice of Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate.
Osnos ponders the difficulties Biden will face if elected and weighs how political circumstances, and changes in the candidate’s thinking, have altered his positions. In this nuanced portrait, Biden emerges as flawed, yet resolute, and tempered by the flame of tragedy—a man who just may be uncannily suited for his moment in history.

Who wasn’t friends with epstein? A shorter list, it would appeareth. Even Satan was on speed dial. Although Satan subsequently distanced himself, in a hasty press release.
And that cover image isn’t wearing a mask!

Vote him out!!!!!

All that needs to be said is for the nearly 50 years this man has been in politics, Biden did not do anything about the problems he is addressing now. As bad as Trump may be, the ills the Democrats are complaining about was not all created in the last 3 years. if the virus is the issue, Trump has been as hamstrung by bureaucracy as any other POTUS in the past half century

The past 4 republican presidents left a rescission.

Yes, a flawed and bitter old man screaming “Get off my lawn!” at squirrels and pidgins. Leftist ghost writers who are trying to lionize Biden are sad individuals.

A Swamp Creature of the lowest order.
The only place I want to read about the Biden Crime Cartel is Police Gazette.

No chapter on Tara Reid? The media is so biased.

Well, he’s the next POTUS. The loonies have run the asylum long enough, I think.
October 23rd, 2020
hmmm, p’haps truer to aver that we are all the loonies, and this expanse represents the asylum. (Apart from Sanna Marin, of course, who’s super hot, in a very cold climate)
“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”

“She’s dark and lovely and passionate. And very, very kind.”
“And exclusive as a mailbox,” I said.
“The Little Sister” (Chapter 19)
-and try to prove me that America (however you define it) isn’t a nuthouse.
Of course it has always been that. Just more positive way.
Damn, I’m in the middle of a Philip Marlowe-book and it shows.

Chandler is a scene, man.
I reckon we’re just hyper-focused on their hyper-publicised & hyper-mediated hypermodernity. If the busy lens was directed elsewhere, we’d be saying: “Wow, those Russians/Brazilians/Chinese are totally cracked. What’s up with those guys?”
That’s the view from Old Europe, at any rate.
(You’re not sayin’ that Sanna Marin is as exclusive as a mailbox, perchance? You’ve Finnished your devotions, then?)
October 23rd, 2020
Well, being a Prime Minister, how can one be anything but?
And about being observed as cracked, hardly anybody says that for example of Canada, or Finland. Anywhere.
October 24th, 2020
I say that about Finland (based on my terrible experience of Finns). And I know a guy who says it about Canadians.
You’ll notice that I purposefully used countries with larger populations, and said that there would have to be an enormous focus directed upon them, as with the Americans.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, cos I look at the media & think they’re cracked as well. But that is mediated experience, after all.
They are a big melting pot as well, a big mix of your lot, mine, and everyone else’s. That’s a different order of social experiment altogether.
My experience of the place is that they’re not really as reported on the media feed: always howling for blood, etc. The relatives & friends I have over there live in communities as sober as anywhere in the West, and live fairly regular, sober lives.
October 24th, 2020
You’ll notice I wrote “hardly anybody”.
Anyhow, the countries you mentioned, and I will include US of A, all have a common nominator: A crackpot and/or dictatorial leadership.
I’m possibly not a typical Finn, if there is such an animal. My ideal life is very boring one and I more or less hate surprises. Outside of films and books, that is.
October 24th, 2020
Several of those places are far more awfully dystopian, of course. Because you can never vote the crackpots out.
