A caution on this book. Ms Funder has come under considerable fire about her portrayal of Orwell and justly so. Apart from some glaring inaccuracies (shouldn’t have been hard to look up where Orwell was really born …) she makes some claims about his behaviour that were proved to be impossible to have occurred (affairs that didn’t happen despite what she claims).
The real shame is she has made Eileen out to be a timid mouse, rather than really elevating the woman as she says she deserves. If the subject interests you far better off seeking out the real biography of Eileen by Sylvia Topp.
