Unabridged
In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI’s most wanted terrorist list.
Assata Shakur’s trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata’s detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign to criminalise and suppress black nationalist organisations.
This intensely personal and political autobiography reveals a sensitive and gifted woman, far from the fearsome image of her that is projected by the powers that be. With wit and candor, Assata recounts the formative experiences that led her to embrace a life of activism. With pained awareness she portrays the strengths, weaknesses and eventual demise of black and white revolutionary groups at the hands of the state.
A major contribution to the history of black liberation, destined to take its place alongside The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the works of Maya Angelou. Foreword written by Angela Davis.

my wish is that one day this vile woman is brought to justice. It pisses me off that she was able to live most of her life in freedom though. if there was any justice she would have been executed or left to rot in a jail cell 23 hours a day for the rest of her life.

Thank you so much Shappy2014!

I’d agree with the whole rule of law approach in normal individual circumstances, and that justice should be blind to status - but the whole “white knight” thing is making me decidedly nervous! Couldn’t she be considered by some to be a “black knight?” Not saying I agree with that either.
There’s a balance to be struck as well (and I’m arguing against myself here) - Irish, Kenyan and American people who were savagely oppressed by the British Imperial meat grinder were justified in mounting insurrections and casting off their barbaric interlopers. There’s an historic analogy to be drawn there.
We have to consider the trauma and damaged consciousness of African Americans (and Israelis) and the horrific injustices and enormities to which they were subject. Personally, I’m with MLK, I think that love is the answer. But I’m just a big Jesus freak. Racism and murder are both anathema to me.

Cute kids posting here. Wish that this person is brought to jail.
Murder is not illegal by any stretch of the imagination.
Soldiers, police (brutality) and the presidents are all free to roam the streets, or get driven around.
If you want to be high and might, present a structural critique of the problem, identify some clear solutions, and call for equal treatment for anyone who commits a crime of a certain degree. Theft over a million isn’t treated a million times worse than theft of a dollar. Hence, law is Simply a joke, especially if you read into lobbying, corruption, and non-democratic deals.
While this person may be a horrible person, I neither know nor care, the childish comments have made me comment. I get that many of the books on socialism or biographies about certain groups are targeted. It’s not strange but quite sad.

To each their own opinion, however, we as a society need to recognize the systematic take-down of the African-American race within the USA, and I believe that it reaches far beyond the police, but is organized at the highest levels of government and beyond that to the ones really running the show.
We as humans need to educate ourselves beyond the race & color issue. We are all just people wanting the same thing for ourselves & our families. Have that respect for yourself and then give it to others, and let other people be and that respect will be returned.
Thank You for sharing this audio-book.

Nice one aj.
@lao - You deftly evaded coherence and comprehension by a significant distance. How did you manage that? I think that murder still tends to stretch legality somewhat. Do you favour undermining the independence of the judiciary, overturning rulings and subverting due process? In your frame, just who is supplanting the sovereignty of the tribunal? What is the source of their legitimacy? Back to the drawing board, I’m afraid!

Caesar963, you are funny! ill informed, but funny.
You speak about the rule of law with obviously no understanding how this was blatantly ignored in Assata’s case.
So many things came to light. The forensic evidence ignored, state troopers visiting the jury whilst in deliberation urging a conviction. The fact that 5 jurors had personal ties to state troopers, the list truly does go on.
Do yourself a favour, use all scholarly quips that you find entertain your peers, even giving them the illusion that you know what your talking about, but please, post comments that are backed by facts, not opinions.

I want to learn more about the case, theblackguy, that’s why I’m here being amusing in a scholarly kind of way. It’s also why I tried to balance what I said about the necessity of the rule of law with the right of self-defence, and why sometimes the correct, legitimate response to widespread, oppressive injustice is revolution. And then I gave historical examples which I thought were relevant.

It’s disgusting that there are people brilliant enough to master human language yet hopeless enough to believe this woman is worth defending.

You can usually tell the best books by the number of self-important pearl-clutchers scandalized by their existence.
