Lucanus grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman governor of Antioch. After studying medicine in Alexandria, he became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world and traveled far and wide through the Mediterranean region healing the sick. As time went on, he learned of the life and death of Christ and saw in him the God he was seeking. To find out all he could about the life and teachings of Jesus, whom he never saw, Lucanus visited all the places where Jesus had been, questioning everyone - including his mother, Mary - who had known him or heard him preach. At last, when he had gathered all information possible, he wrote down what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke.

A 2020 reader’s review…“So enjoyed the detail, the research that Ms. Caldwell gave to enrich the story. Even the characters grew in wisdom and knowledge as they came to understand what was going on around them. It put me in a different position seeing Lucanos as though it were I watching what was happening to the cosmos and how people reacted. All things come together in the birth, death and resurrection of the Christ but watching it unfold as though you were there and not knowing what was going on albeit knowing the ancient readings really made for interesting reading. I am ready to reread to pick up more details.”

One reader nit-picked small details, thought it “sexist and stereotyped.” This is a 62 year old book. Taylor Caldwell books were a good read then and they still are..

Trivia: Her full name was Janet Miriam Holland Taylor Caldwell. Because few women were named Taylor before the 1990’s, her first books were presumed to be written by a man. I just though, at the time, she had an odd name.
