In 2017, DNA tests revealed to the collective shock of many scholars that a Viking warrior in a high-status grave in Birka, Sweden was actually a woman. Rather than holding the household keys, Viking women in history, law, saga, poetry, and myth carry weapons. These women brag, “As heroes we were widely known—with keen spears we cut blood from bone.” In this compelling narrative Brown brings the world of those valkyries and shield-maids to vivid life.

How disappointing that such cisgen propaganda is still being written in 2021! What does DNA have to do with whether this warrior is male or female or other? Are we still locked into the archaic binary sex/gender mindset?
No educated person would assume another’s sex based on such inconsequential information. What we need to know is the opinion of the deceased. Does xe see xemself as Female, Male, Agender, Androgyne, Bigender, Body dysphoric, Boi, Demiboy, Demigirl, Demienby, Demitrans, Feminine-of-center, Feminine-presenting, Femme, Gender apathetic, Gender binary, Gender trinary, Gender quaternary, Gender dysphoric, Gender nonconforming, Gender questioning, Gender variant, Genderfluid, Genderqueer, Graygender, Intersex, Masculine-of-center, Masculine-presenting, Maverique, Multi-gender, Neutroic, Pangender, Polygender, Soft butch, Stone butch, Third gender, Transfeminine, Transgender, Transmasculine, Transitioning, Transsexual, Trigender, Ungendered, Vermigendered or Xenomorph? DNA tests cannot answer this. Only the person xyrself can make this determination.
Follow the science, people! I, for one, will NOT force obsolete cisgen ideas on ancient people no longer able to speak for themselves.

Speaking as a big beautiful black woman who don’t need no man, I find it offensive that the archaeologists presume the race and gender of the Viking decreased.

This is a very good book. I did study Norse history at university when I was younger and find this is rather well done.
As for people complaining they assume this and that about the woman skeleton in question.
It is not as much an assumtion as stating what genetic plot that the subject fit into.
In this case with Vikings (Norsemen), you will find sex had not as much to do with how they viewed people as what they were able to do.
Though I am amazed that an argument of this caliber over the fact the skeleton is from the female genetic coding is causing so many feather to ruffle.
It’s a fact, not an opinion of what the person felt they were. However, before you think that gender was as important to the Norse as you think, I’d read more into their history and, the warrior women….who would put most men/women/bodybuilders/ect to shame with their abilities and, strengths.

As a Norse Historian I simply cannot recommend this book for anything else than dubious fiction.
The book has been built on something, which has been used for feminist propaganda ever since its discovery.
It has been well known for years that, if a Norseman died and his body could not be claimed, Norse women were often burried with their husbands effects when they themselves died. If the husband was a great warrior, husbwufe would received a warriors’ burrial as a token of respect.
Modern scholars took the findings in Birka and ran with it immediatly, which is no surprise when it’s Sweden.
But there have been these findings before, only without the drama of mistaking the gender of the skeleton.
What’s sad is, there is no need for all this seudo sciences. There may not have been female Viking warriors, but women had a big part to player in the Norse society. With protective rights and respect from men. They had many responsabilities, which would’ve made Scandinavia crumble if not upheld when the men were away on raids.
There is so much more to focus on from these times, apart from the war and raiding. Scandinavian society was ahead of its time in countlesse ways, and women were part of that 🙌
