Most historians, both ancient and modern, have viewed the Late Republic of Rome through the eyes of its rich nobility—the 1 percent of the population who controlled 99 percent of the empire’s wealth. In The Assassination of Julius Caesar, Michael Parenti recounts this period, spanning the years 100 to 33 BC, from the perspective of the Roman people. In doing so, he presents a provocative, trenchantly researched narrative of popular resistance against a powerful elite.
As Parenti carefully weighs the evidence concerning the murder of Caesar, he adds essential context to the crime with fascinating details about Roman society as a whole. In these pages, we find reflections on the democratic struggle waged by Roman commoners, religious augury as an instrument of social control, the patriarchal oppression of women, and the political use of homophobic attacks. The Assassination of Julius Caesar offers a whole new perspective on an era thought to be well-known.
Publishers Weekly…
“..narrates a provocative history of the late republic in Rome (100–33 B.C.) to demonstrate that Caesar’s death was the culmination of growing class conflict, economic disparity and political corruption. He reconstructs the history of these crucial years from the perspective of the Roman people, the masses of slaves, plebs and poor farmers who possessed no political power. Roughly 99% of the state’s wealth was controlled by 1% of the population, according to Parenti. By the 60s B.C., the poor populace had begun to find spokesmen among such leaders as the tribunes Tiberius Gracchus and his younger brother, Gaius. Although the Gracchi attempted to introduce various reforms, they were eventually murdered, and the reform movements withered. Julius Caesar, says Parenti, took up where they left off, introducing laws to improve the condition of the poor, redistributing land and reducing unemployment. As Parenti points out, such efforts threatened the landed aristocracy’s power in the Senate and resulted in Caesar’s assassination. Parenti’s method of telling history from the “bottom up” will be controversial, but he recreates the struggles of the late republic with such scintillating storytelling and deeply examined historical insight that his book provides an important alternative to the usual views of Caesar and the Roman Empire.”

Stabity, stab, stab, eh, Caesar?
March 26th, 2022
- and I’d like to see Putin playing the role of old Julius.

Et tu, brutal illodiini?
His last words were actually in Greek. The guy couldn’t stop showing off - even after being rudely penetrated 23 times.
He said something along the lines of, “καὶ σύ, τέκνον” - roughly translated as (and you’ll have 2 bear with me here) “Finland ranked as the happiest country in the world?! Those depressing eejits? Ah here!”
Thx, jo.

so it was a civil war of 1% percent people

1% sounds too low, it should really be about an attack on 6 million, without any pity or mercy. Put them to the sword.

…again.

Defendant Caesar (963, not Gaius Julius), this court finds you guilty of felony-level erudition and sentences you to compulsory commenting on the next fifty uploads of romance novels.
Should only be a few days.

A harsh, draconian judgment. Obviously I refuse to recognise the internet court’s jurisdiction, ur honour; & besides, I have a judicious elsewhere (or “alibi” as they call it now).
That’d be an unusually slow uploading sequence for the romance genre.

Need I remind you that that this court has the power to revoke your irony license? A fate worse than death in your case.
Run THAT through your fancy Greek-character-enabled keyboard.
But in the interest of justice - and because you’ve actually spelled “judgment” correctly…..
Sentence suspended.

I insisted that the manufacturer provide me a keyboard with only Greek characters (such as Odysseus, Mentor, Patroclus, etc. - a great bunch of lads). Then I paid him with his own Koine.
At least the character assassination has a termini.

Bailiff, arrest this man and order in a pint of virtual hemlock.
March 26th, 2022
If you were my wife, ur honour, I’d surely drink it.

No more likely than Sir Winston being married to Lady Astor.
Always a pleasure, Caesar. Hope to see you again soon, but I’ll have to say antio sas for now.
Court adjourned.

@caesar963 “…after being rudely penetrated 23 times” surely not an imposition to he of whom it was said to be “every man’s woman and every woman’s man.”
