At the age of thirteen, Michelangelo enters the workshop of painter Ghirlandaio and studies the fresco painting technique. Son of a surly bourgeois father of noble descent, lost his mother at an early age, Michelangelo eventually becomes fascinated by the texture of marble and wishes to release, the trapped forms which, according to his neo-Platonic worldview, are already hidden inside the raw material.
Stone lived in Italy for years visiting many of the locations in Rome and Florence, worked in marble quarries, and apprenticed himself to a marble sculptor. A primary source for the novel is Michelangelo’s correspondence, all 495 letters of which Stone had translated from Italian by Charles Speroni and published in 1962 as I, Michelangelo, Sculptor. Stone also collaborated with Canadian sculptor Stanley Lewis, who researched Michelangelo’s carving technique and tools. I remember a film titled “The Agony and the Ecstasy” about Michelangelo, featuring Charlton Heston as the artist and Rex Harrison as the Pope who commissioned the Sistine Chapel artwork. The title is the same but the book is newer?

This novel was originally published in 1962 under the title “I Michelangelo, Sculptor”. The movie is from 1967. I guess they changed the title of the novel to underline the connection with the movie.
