Let’s dismantle this melodrama, life’s tough for everyone, no one gets a free pass, saying sexism and ableism team up to ruin everything is exhausting, everyone deals with expectations, men are expected to never show weakness, provide, and die quietly, and claiming disabled people are shaped by “no expectations” is ridiculous, the disability rights movement fights for inclusion and respect, so you can’t say people expect nothing and too much at the same time, life hands everyone challenges, and combining them doesn’t make someone uniquely oppressed, it just makes them human, the memoir idea is fine, but the obsession with “brokenness” only keeps that narrative alive, society doesn’t exist to coddle or villainize, life’s about figuring out your worth, fighting your battles, and kicking challenges in the teeth, not living as a perpetual victim, drop the pity party and embrace agency
