In much of the Islamic world, religion is the central foundation upon which family, community, morality, and identity are built. The inextricable embedment of religion in Muslim culture has forced a new generation of non-believing Muslims to face the heavy costs of abandoning their parents’ religion: disowned by their families, marginalised from their communities, imprisoned, or even sentenced to death by their governments.
Struggling to reconcile the Muslim society he was living in as a scientist and physician and the religion he was being raised in, Ali A. Rizvi eventually lost his faith. Discovering that he was not alone, he moved to North America and promised to use his new freedom of speech to represent the voices that are usually quashed before reaching the mainstream media - those of Atheist Muslims.
The Atheist Muslim recounts the journey that allows Rizvi to criticise Islam - as one should be able to criticise any set of ideas - without demonising his entire people. Emotionally and intellectually compelling, his personal story outlines the challenges of modern Islam and the factors that could help lead it toward a substantive, progressive reformation.

Thanks a lot for sharing your treasures.

Rizvi has always seemed to me both moderate and humorous in his criticism of Islam: two qualities which are especially toxic to religions of all sorts.
Another precious listen, thank you daenigma100.

@pryderi: I hear the brothers have excellent senses of humor…

Profoundly difficult to be an apostate from Islam. In the eyes of some, the person who converts or becomes atheist is a legitimate target.
Of course, let’s not forget that valid critiques and incisive satire of toxic, atheist ideologies were swiftly punished by imprisonment in concentration camps and/or summary murder. Their camps were always filled to maximum caapacity. Reasonable questioning of these appalling, sadistic regimes was not tolerated. Nor was drawing attention to the absolute moral vacuum at the “heart” of the toxic, atheist ideology itself.

caesar963, speak plainly man. none is interested in your intelectual masturbation

Not the masturbation dude again! I’m at a loss, Mr fall. What are you having the most difficulty with - the definitions of the words, the syllable-count (not particularly high, you may notice), the history, politics & moral protest of the 20th Century? Not very challenging issues for someone on a book site, I would have assumed.
We can’t reduce everything to grunts merely to accommodate the…least curious.
(Now pass the virtual kleenex)

fall19, I click on these more controversial books for the comments simply because I know caesar963 will entertain with some sort of insight and humor.
Lighten up and enjoy the ride. it’s all free.

andyinmabch, shall I presume that you are addressing your unassuming criticism to the one commenting which speaks to the vacuum that atheism leaves behind in its wake? The influx of Muslims in secular Europe is evidence enough for that!
I must say, the notion of an Islamic reformation or enlightenment has been a curiosity of mine for some time, and I’ve long doubted the religion has the necessary tools. Perhaps Rizvi has a solution.

Vitriol? Where? Oh, that andy #wanker.
The onanistic onus is only on him, I fear.
(I mean, I repeatedly refute & disillusion a guy, and can he take it with any grace whatsover? No. No, he cannot)
He must have been a supreme dynamo in History class, in addition to his other (lack of) achievements. No evidence for the massive, global atrocities planned & implemented by the ideological tyrannies of the last century? No forced-famines; genocides/democides; concentration camps; post-revolutionary terrors & purges; crimes against humanity or human rights abuses; no Orwellian “Great Leaps Forward,” “Cultural Revolutions” or show-trials? Wow.
Who were all those dirtbags going around in uniforms telling real human beings what to do, then? Was that just Hallowe’en? Or a collective fascist/Marxist wet dream? Whose turn to use the family brain cell this week, I wonder? Perhaps some “evidence” of complex, sequential thought will one day appear. Oy vey…the unmitigated, hysterical bitterness.
Otherwise, greetings to all the people of grace & good will!

caesar963 don’t feed the trolls. they have no point to make, just sniping other people’s comments. Nothing to offer but salacious sarcasm towards those with an actual opinion.
