‘People think that stories are shaped by people. In fact, it’s the other way around.’
At the time of his death in 2015, award-winning and best-selling author Sir Terry Pratchett was working on his finest story yet—his own.
At six years old, Terry was told by his headteacher that he would never amount to anything. He spent the rest of his life proving that teacher wrong. At 66, Terry had lived a life full of achievements: becoming one of the UK’s best-selling writers, winning the Carnegie Medal and being awarded a knighthood for services to literature.
Following his untimely death from Alzheimer’s disease, the mantle of completing Terry’s memoir was passed to Rob Wilkins, his former assistant, friend and now head of the author’s literary estate.
Drawing on his own extensive memories, along with those of Terry’s family, friends, fans and colleagues, Rob recounts Terry’s extraordinary story—from his early childhood to the literary phenomenon that his Discworld series became; and how he met and coped with the challenges that ‘The Embuggerance’ of Alzheimer’s brought with it.

illodiini will appreciate this. Up there in his frozen Finnish fastness. The frosty home of the noble caribou. Nothing says Christmas like the raspy bellow of the caribou.

A caribou once bit my sister…
No realli! She was Karving her initials on the caribou with the sharpened end of an interspace toothbrush given her by Svenge—her brother-in-law— a Helsinki dentist and star of many Finnish movies: “The Hot Hands of a Helsinki Dentist”, “Fillings of Passion”, “The Huge Molars of Horst Nordfink”…
Mynd you, caribou bites Kan be pretti nasti…

That ought to be baubles, strictly speaking (Calpurnia & myself have lovely, impressive baubles, which we only hang on Christmas eve, and then for the 12 nights following - because that is the appropriate tradition. Some (uncultured) people seem to put the tree up just after Hallowe’en. Barbarians.), and right back atcha.

@ferguss - That wouldn’t be 1 of the more noble caribou, to which I was referring. Generally, they’re almost at endangered status, concerningly enough. Probably because people’s sisters are going around trying to Sharpie⟨™⟩ their initials into the poor beasts. You can get a desperate infection from a Sharpie⟨™⟩ bite, I honestly believe. Be sharp on the lookout.
