This first definitive biography of Moses Maimonides, one of the most influential intellects in all of human history, illuminates his life as a philosopher, physician, and lawgiver.
Recalling such best sellers as David McCullough’s John Adams and Walter Isaacson’s Einstein, Maimonides is a biography on a grand scale, brilliantly explicating one man’s life against the background of his time.
As a physician, Maimonides is associated with Hippocrates as a founder of modern medicine; his influence in philosophy is equal to that of Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza, and Kant; in religion, he is as significant as Moses, Martin Luther, and Saint Augustine; and as a lawgiver, he has been recognized by the United States Congress as one of the greatest alongside Hammurabi and Thomas Jefferson.
Now, in a dazzling work of scholarship, Joel Kraemer tells the complete story of Maimonides’s rich life. Maimonides is at once a portrait of a great historical figure and an excursion into the Mediterranean world of the 12th century. Joel Kraemer draws on a wealth of original sources to re-create a remarkable period in history when Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions clashed and mingled in a setting alive with intense intellectual exchange and religious conflict.
Born in Muslim-ruled Spain in 1135, Moses Maimonides was deeply conversant with Arabic philosophy and literature. By the time he was thirty, he was known for his seminal works on the Jewish practices and law. In Egypt, his training as a physician earned him a place in the entourage of the great Sultan Saladin, and his books earned him respect and influenced generations of Christian, Muslim and Jewish thinkers.

A pivotal thinker, for Aquinas and many others. He demonstrates that history is not merely about conflict and power, it’s also about the strength and value of ideas & a beneficial, cross-cultural conversation - carried on betwixt ages and sages.

Solid. A rationalist among mystics.
And as I walk on through troubled times, my spirit gets so downhearted sometimes.
We could certainly use a little rationalist thinking these days.

The only way forward is ever deeper into the past. (Hear me out, before you throw me out!) By that, I don’t mean the fabricated nostalgia that the gullible British so easily fall prey to, desperately seeking refuge in a past that never was.
The fullness of history is our surest guide - not merely the objective analysis of events, but the history of ideas. The very best that has been said, thought, and written. A knowledge of history exposes all toxic ideologies for what they are: lethally dangerous, stupid, and fraudulent.
It prevents you from being a prisoner of the present age (I was sure Chesterton said something like that, but if not, I hereby claim it).
It also contextualises the hell out dis b1tch (almost certainly Chesterton).

Those who don’t remember the past… something something something… I repeat myself.
It is almost like if we had a collegial group of folks who could distill the best lessons of the past. Perhaps to class-ify and distill the universe. But, alas, instead of teachers we have preachers. Instead of an informed electorate we have “low information” voters.
It is said, when the great ancient way of the universe is forgotten, kindness and morality arise. When wisdom and intelligence are born, the great pretense begins.
Our neighbors have forgotten anything but their quarter acre. They are afraid of the “other”. They resonate with grievance. They are swayed by fear.
They need to take a fooking breath and remember this:
In dwelling, be close to the land.
In meditation, go deep in the heart.
In dealing with others, be gentle and kind.
In speech, be true.
In ruling, be just.
In daily life, be competent.
In action, be aware of the time and the season.
No fight: No blame.
