The most authoritative life of Mao ever written, by the bestselling author of Wild Swans, Jung Chang and her husband, historian Jon Halliday.
Based on a decade of research, and on interviews with many of Mao’s close circle in China who have never talked before, and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him, this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, and showing a completely unknown Mao: he was not driven by idealism or ideology; his intimate and intricate relationship with Stalin went back to the 1920s, ultimately bringing him to power; he welcomed Japanese occupation of much of China; and he schemed, poisoned and blackmailed to get his way.
After Mao conquered China in 1949, his secret goal was to dominate the world. In chasing this dream he caused the deaths of 38 million people in the greatest famine in history. In all, well over 70 million Chinese perished under Mao’s rule, in peacetime.
Combining meticulous history with the story-telling style of Wild Swans, this biography makes immediate Mao’s roller-coaster life, as he intrigued and fought every step of the way to force through his unpopular decisions. Mao’s character and the enormity of his behaviour towards his wives, mistresses and children are unveiled for the first time.
This is an entirely fresh look at Mao in both content and approach. It will astonish historians and the general reader alike.

Phenomenal, Audio-freak - first time I’ve seen this great work up here. Not a popular book within the communist party! It details just how sleazy & evil was the system he presided over. An important wake-up call, for those with ears to hear & minds to reason.

Thank you.

“The system he presided over”, as in Maoism, as distinct from communism or socialism, which I think you’re trying to suggest. You’re quite right, Maoism was evil and thankfully that’s not something we need to worry about.

Not suggesting, directly stating. Marxism is the root evil, is it not? Each time it fails (100% failure record, unless you count mass-murder a thundering success) it’s wholly infantile to expediently try to separate it out, as not representing the sanguinary, utopian ideal. A ploy often attempted, however. The semantic prevarication game is profoundly unedifying. Every geographical & cultural iteration is a working-out of Marxism in the real world. No escaping that one, I’m afraid. The design & floor plan of the concentration camps may differ, but the countless victims of each sordid franchise-operation are just as dead.
We can’t get way with placing responsibility for the commission of so much unimaginable, systematic evil & suffering on a sole actor. Remember the willing accomplices and the mindlessly cruel collectivist doctrines which they implemented. We shouldn’t repeat the hideous errors of the “useful eejit” generations, by refusing to see the transparent barbarism of such toxic ideologies.
There is a deeply callous aspect to this mindset/pathology whereby the slaughter of “well over 70 million” human beings & the human rights violations of so many more are determined to be “thankfully…not something we need to worry about.” That’s where we differ. There exists a moral duty on all thinking people to utterly condemn all such grotesque ideological evil.
Call evil by its name - whether it be fascism/Marxism, or any variation thereof.

one argue that there was never a communist regime that was not attacked immediately after taking power. Not defending Reds, but i think it is worth taking into consideration.

Attacked & attacking, m, violent revolution was written into Marx’s mission statement as being the only effective means of seizing absolute power. So, if you attack, you’ll inevitably receive pushback. The population always suffered the most, because everyone was deemed to be an enemy of the revolution.
Nothing can ever justify the enormous scale of the murders, torture and suffering, least of all anti-life ideologies like fascism/Marxism.

well, all revolutions are born from social upheaval. Those in West are in more distant history. And just to elaborate on my original comment: Russia was attacked by like 14 countries after the Bolsheviks took power. And just for sake of conversation, what would you say about Cuba or any Latin America countries?
I grew up in the Red mess, so I am definitely as anti commie as one can be, but I would dare to say that there were some justified measures decisions.

There is always a need for justified social reform, the catastrophe is when that necessity is hijacked by an evil, mass-murdering ideology for its own nefarious ends. That’s the case for all of the countries you mentioned, as well as China, et al.
The tragedy of Russia is that because the Mensheviks continued to implement their treaty obligations regarding the war, the Germans transported Lenin back to Russia and the minority Bolsheviks seized power, plunging Russia into utter darkness.

Of course, I respect that you would know better than most. At best, my knowledge is theoretical, but I’m always interested in knowing more.

It is always great to find people who keep their minds open. In my opinion the current trend in sucking wealth from nations in name of defending democracy or whatever is just as devious, even if more effective and less bloody on surface. If you place some regime in isolation its only people under that regime that will suffer, all eventually leading to hardened position and more extremes. Look what happened and is happening in and with Iran.
All the best Caesar.
P.S. try Paul Johnson Modern Times (he is rather right winged, actually super right winged but his books have central idea and are great to read/listen).
