Clem Bastow grew up feeling like she’d missed a key memo on human behaviour. She found the unspoken rules of social engagement confusing, arbitrary and often stressful. Friendships were hard, relationships harder and the office was a fluorescent-lit nightmare of anxiety. It wasn’t until Clem was diagnosed as autistic, at age 36, that things clicked into focus.
The obsession with sparkly things and dinosaurs. The encyclopaedic knowledge of popular music. The meltdowns that would come on like a hurricane. The ability to write eloquently while conquering basic maths was like trying to understand ancient Greek. These weren’t just ‘personality quirks’ but autistic traits that shaped Clem’s life in powerful ways.
With wit and warmth, Clem reflects as an autistic adult on her formative experiences as an undiagnosed young person, from the asphalt playground of St Joseph’s Primary School in Melbourne to working as an entertainment journalist in Hollywood. Along the way she challenges the broader cultural implications and ideas around autism, especially for women and gender-diverse people.

Brought on by vaccine-damage as proven by the growth of Autism from very rare a few decades ago to very common today. Of course, not discussed, as one cannot discuss the holy cult of the needle.

Nope. You are overwhelmingly and categorically incorrect. Vaccines don’t “create” autistic people, God does. It was not very rare a few decades ago…doctors were too dumb to know of it and they still are inept at diagnosing it. Your delusion of some holy cult of the needle isn’t discussed, of course, because it…well, isn’t the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard but it makes the list. If you feel like you can’t talk about your stupidity, I assure you this is for the best and suggest maybe investing in a houseplant or two so you can dive into your feels with a receptive audience. This is a book site and you’re trying to punch above your weight.

As a high function autistic adult I can safely say you are both wrong. Vaccines in general do not cause autism. In fact many pre-vaccine figures of history have had many of the signs of living a high functioning autistic life, like Leonardo Davinci or many other famous artists and great thinkers.
Being neuro-atypical has been common throughout human history and goes back more than 5000 years which means god also has nothing to do with it, or anything. The energy at the source of creation has no opinions, preferences, or plans and your superstition is part of the chaotic confusion that makes being autistic so difficult in religious societies.
Being able to see the world differently and having a hightened sensitivity can be a gift when raised in a supportive environment. It can also be disorientating and confusing when raised in an environment based on believing contradictions and falsehoods.
The fact is the signs of autism have spanned all of human history but the medical communities recognition and classification has only been continuously fine tuned for the last 40+ years.
Now imagine being sensitive to lights and sounds and certain touch stimulation and living in a world where everywhere you go you are assaulted by ads and commercials designed for physcological manipulation. Its very difficult to find your feet when no one seems to understand your experience and society seems designed for the dull and insensitive people who sleep through life.
Any book that helps autisitic individuals feel they are not alone and that others understand their experience should be valued.
Please keep your conspiracy and superstition out of the discussion and discuss the book itself.

My saying God creates autistic people was actually a facetious counter to an anti-vaxxer…but your second paragraph doesn’t make sense (based on religious dogma). To them, yes, God does create all living things and very much has opinions (Jews are His chosen people and women are inferior), preferences (Man rules the world in His image), and plans (repent or you will be judged). Besides that, God didn’t create religion so you can’t blame Him for all the superstitious gobbledy-gook ignorant enlightened people wrote down or believe in His name.
I hope you’ve discovered how to live in a world absolutely not designed with people like you in mind. While I wouldn’t say it is instead made for dull and insensitive people sleeping through life, I agree that very little consideration was given for people prone to overstimulation. Not sure if you’re implying that you’re more susceptible to the targeted psychological manipulation that is modern marketing but I could do without it, too. And it’s not that no one seems to understand your experience; it’s just that those who do aren’t the ones making those big decisions for everybody. Maybe that will change in the future. Avoid saying it will make things more inclusive, though, since that will trigger a third of people and they’ll protest their right to not be inclusive and blame the gays for all their woes and won’t be swayed when you remind them you are talking about autism and not their half-a**ed delusion of immorality. I, for one, hope the change is coming.
