This book paints a vivid picture of Jefferson Davis as a multifaceted, often charismatic man who mirrored the turbulent times in which he lived and who stood solidly for the South that he loved. Ranging over the complete span of his long life, it shows him as a hardworking Mississippi planter, a compassionate slave owner, a hero of the Mexican War, and an able secretary of war under Franklin Pierce. But it is on the years of the Civil War and Davis’s controversial performance as president of the Confederacy that the book naturally focuses.
Loved by many for his eloquence, courage, loyalty, and devotion, he was vilified by many more for his well-known obstinacy and vanity, his feuds with his best commanders, and his unwillingness to delegate responsibility to others. Judicious, balanced, compassionate, Jefferson Davis is an enthralling account of a remarkable man.

“he was vilified by many more for his well-known obstinacy and vanity, his feuds with his best commanders, and his unwillingness to delegate responsibility to others.”
…um…how about that whole ‘turned traitor in the hopes of building a slave owning empire’, thing? Pretty sure that trumps anything else he could be vilified for.

I am afraid things in history are much more complicated than this. For example is Washington also a traitor beacuse he wanted to build a slave empire? Sometimes one battle is only difference between a historical criminal and a hero.

What’s the difference between a man who fought to establish this country and a traitor who fought to tear it down? Gee, I dunno.

Ok but I am still sure there is people who will find him a person worth studying form a objective point of view :)

People seem to not understand what the name of our country means anymore. UNITED STATES. Means many states, individually coming together to form a country. Our country is not called The Federal Government. Even Washington said that if the government failed to do its job, then it was the duty of the people to form a NEW government. Southerners believed that the fed gov was gaining too much power. Lincoln won his first term….without one vote in the south. How could that be? People 150 yrs ago thought differently than we do today. To them, slavery was normal. I’m not upholding it, just wish people would use a bit of psychology when trying to understand why it was different then. The U.S. flag flew over slavery for MANY yrs. No one condemns that. The south wasn’t trying to destroy any nation. They weren’t trying to dismantle America. The U.S. would have still been a nation. Just with fewer states if the south had one. Plus, the VAST majority, including Lincoln himself, didn’t even want blacks in the country after the war. People should “read” up on it all before leaving snide, uneducated comments. You’ll be surprised at what you actually believe is false.

All of you who use the word “traitor” are the biggest traitors of all- and I’m sure there was no shortage of you on the British side of 1776.
