A biting, brilliant, often hilarious guide to socialism for budding anti-capitalists who know it’s time to dump their toxic ex (Capitalism) and try something finer. Journalist Malaika Jabali debunks myths, centers forgotten socialists of color who have shaped our world, and shows socialism is not all Marx and Bernie Bros—it can be pretty sexy.
We’ve all dated someone who took control of the relationship—you know, someone who makes you feel like you’re unhappy because you’re just not putting in the work, or it’s all in your head. But when you think about trying to meet new people, it feels terrifying. Like, have you looked at Tinder recently? It’s rough out there!
Your tough-love new best friend, award-winning journalist, policy attorney, and life-long socialist Malaika Jabali is here to say: we are all in a generations-long toxic relationship with Capitalism, and it is time to get the h*ll out of there and move ALONG.
She gives you everything you need to know about what a healthy relationship could actually look like, issue by issue—from healthcare and housing to the whole concept of American democracy—with our new boo: Socialism. And no, Socialism isn’t the boring, grey, authoritarian, Cold-War-era monster that you’ve heard about.
With accessible explanations and illustrations, often surprising graphs and stats, and some Drake memes, this book will show you that we NEED to build a world that’s safer, kinder, cleaner, healthier, and more equal. And that this isn’t a utopian dream—it’s within our grasp, if we collectively decide to call out Capitalism for what it really is and wake up to a better future.
Fun, smart, and inspiring, It’s Not You It’s Capitalism is the hottest new relationship in your life!

Caesar sure did comment. So did the usual antisocialism trolls. It’s right over here –>

Until you can show everyone what country has a successful socialist state, or is better than what the United States was, don’t even bother.
Everyone knows just how successful its been. Until you have lived in a socialist country (So many of them have come to America to escape it, NO ONE has ever escaped America to a socialist country) you have to be insane to think its just going to work because you wish it so. It wont.

@Hogweed
After WWII, the UK had a largely socialist system and we gained healthcare, free education, old age care and a range of other benefits which the Right has been selling off to their rich friends ever since.
In addition, the Scandinavian countries have made enormous success with democratic socialism, including the best education programs in the world.
But, bearing in mind that you’re a far-right whingebag, the entirety of Europe, Asia and everywhere else that isn’t the blessed ‘Murica is a socialist hellhole, so I know you won’t bother looking into anything I say
I’ve even lived in at least one fully communist country and the majority of the population were MUCH happier than you lot!
USA! USA! keep repeating! USA!
lol

@Hogweed
Oh, and I’ve met countless people from the USA who have got the fûck out and now live in Vietnam and other “socialist” countries, so you’re demonstrably and entirely wrong about that.
SO MANY places in the world are more desirable to live than your beloved ‘Murica. Just because you personally can’t imagine it don’t make it true bubba

Yes, let’s give up what works or everyone because indoctrinated socialist young people don’t know how to operate in a capitalist system because liberal socialist-run public schools no longer teach them how INTENTIONALLY for widespread poverty, hunger, misery, tyranny and state slavery that people from communist/socialist countries flee to capitalist countries to escape by the millions every year.

Point of information (as we used say in more civilised times): no country in W. Europe (incl Scandinavia) has ever practiced ideological state socialism. All feature market systems, business stimulus & incentivisation, & the crucial attraction of foreign direct investment. (And yes, many Americans erroneously imagine Scand & much of Eur to be socialist.)
Ideological socialism is a completely different system, and along with the other extreme ideologies, has a 100% record of failure; whereas market systems feature cycles of boom/bust.
On the specific hx, the British postwar govt implemented some recommendations from the wartime Beveridge Report (drafted by William Beveridge - a Liberal, rather than a socialist).
In this connexion, Western countries have been broadly characterised by liberal reform & Christian charity efforts - these have segued into govt investment programmes.
State school systems in US & UK have been experiencing significant problems in relation to outcomes in recent decades.
Similarly, due to demographic factors (living longer) - public healthcare models are enormously stretched, & will only become more strained in terms of resources. (UK Brexit débâcle has exacerbated this & other areas - pharma, etc.)
There has never been a fully capitalist, free market state. Govts everywhere intervene & regulate.
Here in Ireland, we’re significantly market-driven - probably to an even greater extent than many other Eur states. This is how we pay for social programmes & invest in our people; business is stimulated & incentivised - this increased economic activity brings in greater revenue - which we are able then to invest in health, education, social programmes, etc.
It’s just what works. Failed ideology demonstrably does not work.

I fully guarantee nobody on this site who constantly bitches about “socialism” is making any kind of nuanced definition whatsoever. “Socialism” is bad because ‘MURICA/daddy/youtube/Trump says so. As I said above, the entirety of the world is a socialist hell to your average uneducated, sister-schtupping, bigoted American “patriot”.

@caesar963
In other words, socialism as practiced in varying degrees around the world isn’t an “extreme ideology”.
November 23rd, 2023
The historical/political/economic distinction that can be made is that definitive ideological state socialism, the actual examples we have observed, exists at the extreme end of the ideological spectrum.
November 23rd, 2023
Sure. Let’s break up with the only system to lift the world out of poverty. Brilliant.

@caesar963
Fine, answer your own point rather than mine.

The issue isn’t capitalism, its greed. Adam Smith would probably be appalled at many of the “capitalist” practitioners of the current age. CEO’s should not be earning those outrageous compensations, that money should be going to the shareholder.
November 24th, 2023
The issue is ideological state socialism (state ownership over against private property). Those who support this desire the extreme abandonment/destruction of the market system, business stimulus, incentivisation, & the attraction of foreign direct investment.
Replacement of the system which has increased our prosperity, health outcomes, longevity, innovation, & social programmes. This is how we finance such beneficial interventions.
We know the history of such ideological experiments.

The issue is greed and the desire to rule over others. There is no moral reason for a billionaire. At 5% apr interest a single billion returns more than most people earn in a lifetime of work., and the billionaire did nothing to earn it their money did. Capitalism is inherently predatory and destructive which is why strong government controls must be placed on it. As to your “system which has increased our prosperity, health outcomes, longevity, innovation, & social programmes” it depends on where in the social structure you are. If you are toward the top life is sweet, if you are at the bottom your shorter life is one of exploitation. If these issues did not exist Karl Marx would have had no reason to kvetch.
November 25th, 2023
““system which has increased our prosperity, health outcomes, longevity, innovation, & soc progs” depends on where in social structure u are” - No, across all measurements & categories these have improved; a fortiori they have improved vastly over the last 50 yrs. And social programmes, public healthcare & educational opporunities are specifically targeted towards less advantaged groups. (life expectancy has increased by 25 yrs over the last century, for inst.)
“issue is greed & desire rule over others” - We had that with the extreme, failed ideologies of the last century - power over people was the central concern, & amassing privileges. The human beings who did not fit “Utopia” were “liquidated.”
No billionaire had as much power over a person than the all-powerful state ideology, which could actually turn off your food (Holodomor, the Great Leap Famine, etc.), turn off your human rights & turn off your life.
“Capital is inherent predatory & destruct” - As were the failed, genocidal ideologies, which always destroyed the lives of those under their control, & destroyed entire societies.
It would appear that human beings tend to be inherently predatory & destructive, which is why we have to have strong constitutional protections in order to secure people’s rights; & place strong controls on govt/state power. We need to learn from the past & be conscious of the 20th c dark age.
November 25th, 2023
Here, we incentivise business & the market sector; thereby, more revenue is created; which we can tax; then spend the increased revenue on our social programmes, healthcare & education.
However, introduce extreme ideology, & you destroy that vital process & those beneficial opportunities. Unsustainable taxes & that sector is effectively gone.
It’s about what works & learning from the catastrophic errors of extreme ideologies.
November 26th, 2023
Ummm, I’m really not sure where you get the extreme ideologies from what I’ve said. No denying that capitalism has benefited peoples lives. It has also had negative impacts on their lives as well. The marketing and sale of tobacco products, 8 million deaths per year per WHO, is a prime example. Global warming will end up costing trillions and lead to the death of multiple millions. The poor frequently find that the only housing available is next to industrial sites and as a result they experience shorter lives, in part, due to exposure to toxins.
As to taxes here in the states as Warren Buffet points out his secretary pays more in taxes (proportional to income) than he does. Taxes are spent on corporate welfare while programs that benefit the most vulnerable are constantly whittled away at. The mantra is trickle down economics and the free market, both of which are myths. I’m not saying we need to ditch capitalism, but it needs to be adjusted to become more people friendly and less about the bottom line at all costs.
Capitalism, like other social ideologies, has the potential of being an extreme ideology if left unchecked. We need to take the best of all these ideologies and meld them into something that benefits all people not just the select few.
November 26th, 2023
Sounds like you do need reform within the parameters of the liberal democratic market system; & if that’s all you’re suggesting, then that’s perfectly valid. (But the bk is about how “sexy” socialism is - & following the catastrophic ideological failure, societal collapse, planned famines, genocides & slave states of the last century, that kind of willed historical illiteracy is more than a little obscene.)
The anti-capitalist countries also had problems with smoking, so that was a general scourge. No doubt that intensive industrialisation has harmed our environment. However, I don’t think there exists the international will to really address it. People seem to be waiting for some kind of technological fix.
There has never been a fully capitalist, free market state. Govts everywhere intervene & regulate. Constant reform is essential, but with tax reform it’s necessary to get the balance just right. If you disincentivise the market sector, it will lead to major economic setbacks & job losses. Also, when you especially target wealth you just get more capital flight. So, the apparent panaceas just turn into serious problems, with reduced resources invested in your country, & more invested in other countries.
Just on that point of “trickle down economics & free market, both of which are myths” - that approach is largely the one we follow here. We incentivise business & market sector; so more revenue is created; which we tax; then spend that increased revenue on social programmes, healthcare & education.
If instead we really taxed business & targeted wealth, we would destroy that beneficial balance. Investment would dry up & jobs would disappear. Tax unsustainably & you sabotage your economy.
