David Irving is the only competent historian in English regarding this period of history. Certainly Kershaw is not.
Besides other considerations, Irving is completely fluent not only in the German language but of that language as it was used in this period, often in handwritten documents and using military and bureaucratic jargon, acronyms, abbreviations, etc. that would be meaningless to anyone else. His biography of Hitler draws on primary sources not previously accessed, as is common for historians like Kershaw - not going to original sources. It was Irving that immediately spotted the so-called “Hitler Diaries” as a fake, a hoax. He saw that because he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the period and realised Hitler would not have been making banal diary entries immediately after the attempt on his life in 1944 in which he was injured. He also suspected the ink was modern but no analysis had been done or sought by those claiming them to be real. How can the Kershaws of establishment History get the right answers when they don’t even know what questions to ask? Or when there are some questions they will NEVER ask because they don’t want the answer!
If you want the most factual account of Hitler’s life then you are wasting your time if you haven’t read Irving’s biography. Kershaw is a hack I’m afraid, though a very successful and eloquent one to be sure.
Anticipating any ill-informed and nonsensical claims are made about Irving being a holocaust denier or anti-Semite (it is the Palestinians that are Semites, not modern Jewry who are Europeans, by and large) if you haven’t read Irving you don’t know what you are talking about and are just parroting propaganda, which is precisely how propaganda is meant to work, of course.

David irving is a convicted Nazi sympathiser, revisionist and holocaust denier. Now we know the truth, it is easy to spot some of his lies but others are nuanced and cunningly misrepresent primary sources. Nothing he has ever written or researched can be trusted any longer, including his interpretations.
As a historian his work will never be taken seriously again. As a right-wing propagandist and Hitlerite he has had few equals in the late 20th century.
