Few mixtures are as toxic as absolute power and insanity. When nothing stands between a leader’s delusional whims and seeing them carried out, all sorts of bizarre outcomes are possible.
This audiobook will look at the lives of the nine most mentally unbalanced figures in history. Some suffered from genetic disorders that led to schizophrenia, such as French King Charles VI, who thought he was made of glass. Others believed themselves to be God’s representatives on earth and wrote religious writings that they guaranteed to the reader would get them into heaven, even if these leaders were barely literate.
Whether it is Ottoman Sultan Ibrahim I practicing archery on palace servants or Turkmenistan President-for-Life Akhbar Turkmenbashi renaming the days of the week after himself and constructing an 80-foot-tall golden statue that revolves to face the sun, crazed leaders have plagued society for millenia.
While such stories are amusing, this audiobook also contemplates the addictive nature of power and the effects it has on those who cling to it for too long. It explores how leaders can undertake the extraordinarily complicated job of leading a country without their full mental faculties and sometimes manage to be moderately successful. It examines why society tolerates their actions for so long and even attempts to put a facade of normalcy on rulers, despite everyone knowing that they are mentally unstable. The audiobook also explores if insane rulers are a relic of the age of monarchs and will die out in the age of democracy or if they will continue to plague nations in the 21st century.
Finally, as many armchair psychologists question the mental health of Donald Trump and other populist politicians in the United States and Europe, all but diagnosing them with mental illness, this audiobook sets to show that truly insane rulers are categorically different in the ways they endanger their population.

“psychologists question the mental health of Donald Trump”
No conflict of interest there, not to mention the absurdity of pretending they can properly diagnose (criteria) a person based on 10-20 second MSM sound bites.
‘Psychologists Looked In The Mirror … And Saw A Bunch Of Liberals’
“The survey also found that 37.5 percent of respondents expressed a willingness to discriminate against conservative colleagues when making hiring decisions. Psychologists, it appears, tend to fall on the liberal end of the political spectrum.
Social psychology’s left tilt has been widely discussed, yet it has been difficult to measure how political leanings influence the work that the field produces. But a new study has tried to quantify just that, and it found that social psychologists assess conservatives differently than liberals. It also found that scientists were aware of the potential for problems and willing to acknowledge them. The results confirm that a lack of political diversity within psychology may bias its findings on political issues.”

If Hillary won, she’d probably come in at #6 on the list. Psycho.

@apnea If the individual self-discloses as freely as DJT, and the majority of statements made by him are falsehoods ( 23.8 demonstrably false statements Trump makes per day, nearly 20,000 since taking office), one could safely conclude Donald J Trump is a compulsive liar. No liberally biased psychologists needed for objectively observable facts. If Trump also encourages violence against those who oppose him, and that violence then occurs, a reasonable person can safely conclude Trump will use violence to suppress opposition, and is reasonably also an authoritarian.
Finally, if Trump ALSO demonstrates a willingness to subvert law to protect himself, he is also a clear and present danger to a Republic based on the rule of law. As to “liberal bias”- I accept the label proudly, as you evidently proclaim your own conservative bias with equal pride. There is no such thing as an unbiased observer, but Trump has self-disclosed behavior far greater than a 10-20 second MSM sound bite in the public space to reveal a very sick, very dangerous man.

I think any book which offers us 9 leaders more bewildered than Donald Trump deserves our respect for effort, at the very least.
Thank you Jinal123, it sounds fascinating.

Oh how I SO WISH Trump was 1/10th of one percent as mentally unbalanced as the Donkeys like to pretend. We could put an end to lot of this nonsense real fast. But alas, he’s pretty well balanced given his money and power and means. We know this because so many of his enemies are still breathing when they otherwise wouldn’t be if he was the maniac they portray.

There is more than one type of mental instability, if your only criteria for being “mentally unbalanced” is homicide, then that’s on you.
I certainly have no confidence in his cognitive health after spending months wearing a mask in public while he continues to cluck about statues and fight an ongoing pandemic by alternating between ignoring it and wishing it away.
Maybe he will eventually off one of “his enemies” and everyone can watch his supporters move the goalposts back even farther about what counts as “mentally unbalanced” and we can all stand around with surprised expressions on our face than nobody can see because we’re all wearing f’kin masks.

Where’s Obama’s name, Clinton (The Rapist), Biden (The Dementia Guy), and let’s not forget Hillary.
How about the entire Democratic Party?

The Orange One unbelievably seeems to have won ‘merica over!.
As a Brit who has to listen to BoJo’s bluster too, how have we allowed these incompetents a sniff of power?
Both countries have shamefully misshandled the pandemic and pretend they’ve got it under control.
And, please dont mention Bexit!

“Psychiatry - The Science of Lies” … Thomas Szasz
August 2nd, 2020
Thank you for this upload. There is very little mention of Trump whatsoever, maybe a couple of paragraphs at most. In fact, the author notes that compared to some of the whack jobs he is going to talk about, Trump is “not even close to being one of the truly mad leaders. The truly mad leaders compete at a completely different level.” So you conservatives got yourselves all worked up about slights that you invented out of ignorance.
The leaders discussed are:
1. Ivan the Terrible (psychopath)
2. Caligula (psychopath)
3. Charles IV (I don’t remember what the conclusion was)
4. Ibrahim I (psychopath, manipulated by others)
5. George III (probably arsenic poisoning from medication)
6. Ludwig II (more eccentric than actually crazy, and probably gay and shamed for it)
7. Idi Amin (psychopath/sadist)
8. Berdymukhammedov of Turkmenistan (narcissist)
9. Kim Jong-un (narcissist)
The author never discusses Trump after the introduction. Instead, he describes the behavior of the aforementioned leaders, then discusses whether or not they were likely to be considered insane by today’s experts. Very well written and engaging.

Yeah, but the first Turkmen prez was a lot crazier (substantially drug-fuelled) - although they both seem rather eccentric; also consider: Khan Noonien Singh, Nero, Commodus, assorted Mayan CEOs, Sauron, Håkon the Crazy, and the Viking Berserkers?

Caesar, he probably stopped at nine, because he ran out of time.

…that’s insane…
August 3rd, 2020
Peculiar he didn’t include Joseph Stalin or Pol Pot. Hard Pass!

Writer is imbalance to view Trump as mental. Trump is the best president of US unless the writer is leftist and paid by CCP
August 5th, 2020
Yes, Trump is the best president of US at the moment.
August 5th, 2020
Dang, I’m crafty…
August 6th, 2020
I put this book down because the first statements didn’t comport with what I now know about Trump.
Absolute best president of US.
Kind of dumb to start one’s book by descending into derangement.
August 9th, 2020
For the terminally Trumpian here: I think Trump is the worst president US have had. But since he is , at the moment, the ONLY president of US, he must be the best there is.
