Kershaw’s two-volume biography Hitler, subtitled 1889–1936: Hubris (1999) and 1936–1945: Nemesis (2000), ranks among the most significant of its kind. For this abridgment of his opus, Kershaw stripped out its scholarly apparatus, reduced verbatim quotations from primary sources, and added an essay of reflections on his approach to the study of his infamous subject.

Thank you very much, oktiabriata1917, for your upload of this excellent book. 45 hours is long listening, but Kershaw is a good writer, so there’s a minimum of slog. I read the original two volumes, and liked it so well that I’m eager to listen to the short(?) version.

Pz971 What are you expecting to find??? Some new revelation proving Hitler to have been some misunderstood victim of Allied aggression?!?! The guy was a nut job, plain and simple!! My grandparents, on my father’s side, lived in Germany during the war, my grandmother was a nurse, and my grandfather was a part of armies anti-aircraft units. They fled Germany, by boat, for America, as the USSR came in from the east, and the ONLY reason they were able to escape was that my grandmother was pregnant with my oldest uncle,and a border guard took pity on them, not to mention the bribe they had to pay. My grandmother wont talk about the war itself, but she does speak about what it was like after the Versailles treaty, the political revolving door that took place after the Kaiser abdicated, and when Hitler became Chancellor, and she tells of how crazy the guy was. Not saying crazy as in out of his mind, but crazy as in how cruel he was, how power hungry he was, how much of an egomaniac he was, and how no matter what the reality was, he continued to live in his own little world believing how great everything was going vs the allies. Even when the average citizen knew the war was lost, Hitler continued to INSIST that they were winning!!

@Edwardj1880 - so what you’re saying is we should hide and censor any books about people who may have been psychotic ? That applies to more than it doesn’t INCLUDING “heroes” - we need to know how why and when. NOT to censor
