What is it like to be a refugee? It is a question many of us do not give much thought to, and yet there are more than 25 million refugees in the world.
Aged eight, Dina Nayeri fled Iran along with her mother and brother and lived in the crumbling shell of an Italian hotel-turned-refugee camp. Eventually, she was granted asylum in America. She settled in Oklahoma, then made her way to Princeton University. In this book, Nayeri weaves together her own vivid story with the stories of other refugees and asylum seekers in recent years, bringing us inside their daily lives and taking us through the different stages of their journeys, from escape to asylum to resettlement. In this book, a couple falls in love over the phone, women gather to prepare noodles that remind them of home, a closeted queer man tries to make his case truthfully as he seeks asylum, and a translator attempts to help new arrivals present their stories to officials.
Nayeri confronts notions like “the swarm”, and, on the other hand, “good” immigrants. She calls attention to the harmful way in which Western governments privilege certain dangers over others. With surprising and provocative questions, The Ungrateful Refugee challenges us to rethink how we talk about the refugee crisis.

When it comes to “refugees”, there’s some important questions few people seem to care about and ask persistently:
What is so fundamentally wrong with countries and societies, from which so many people can only flee?
Why it is that they can solve their problems only by moving from country A (non-western) to country B (western) — and not by doing something about those problems in their native countries — so then there will be no need for them to migrate and suffer various inconveniences and indignities in the receiving western countries, real or imagined?
Why is this problem treated by western governments and media like a perpetual bad weather nobody can do anything about, from which people can only escape and seek protection elsewhere - and not like something those very people are supposed to care about and sort out for their own good?
I remember a comment of a patriotic American, talking to a Mexican on the Net about immigration: “I understand you have a problem in your country, and I’m ready to take my rifle and come help you to get things right, to fight the real enemy with you — why you are so eager to come to my country and fight me instead?”

@alnilam Western countries install dictatorships and administer the crisis of their countries, a great example is syria. how on earth a sociopathic bloody tyrant is still ruling syria?

Not all problems can be solved with a gun. Quite the opposite.

Even the Dalai Lama recognizes that refugees are not orphans in need of adoption.
You should take them in in bad times, train them up, and then when things settle down, you should send them back to take care of their countries.
Instead, you hand them everything on a plate including citizenship they didn’t earn and benefits they didn’t pay for and they’re so entitled they write books about how terrible you are.

@Gweilo
> Not all problems can be solved with a gun…
Of course not, I meant it as a principle, i.e. there’s America and the rest of the world, so either the latter will gradually become more like the former (so there will be no pressing need for refugees to escape and come to America) — or vice versa, America will gradually become more like the rest of the world — only in this case there will be no other America where people can escape to. And if you have some promising third option in mind, I’m all ears.

Boris Johnson has betrayed us all on borders
Can it be only five years since Boris Johnson and Priti Patel toured the nation before the EU referendum, promising Brexit would mean we’d take back control of our borders and stop uncontrolled, unsustainable illegal immigration into this country?
‘The only way to take back control of immigration is to Vote Leave on 23 June,’ declared Boris — and millions of Brits took him at his word.
Fast forward to today and there’s no control. More than 900 immigrants have crossed the Channel illegally in the past fortnight alone.

The title of this book poses an intriguing prremise, so it will be informative, whatever else.
Just for the record,so wrong statements don’t go unchallenged, Assad is not ruler of Syria by Western instalment as The Shah of Persia was, and Saddam Hussein. And whether he is in fact, a ’sociopathic bloody tyrant’ is open for debate. Certainly the latest allegations of chemical attacks by Syrian forces in Douma have been contested by the more informed western journalists.

@alnilam it is idealistic to think that everyone who doesn’t like something in his country can stand up and fight for it to change. There is something called balance of power and the right timing. To wait for these two conditions to gather, if you’re on the weaker side then survival is your priority. Think of the Puritans migration, the Jewish refugees escaping persecution, …
There’s also a trap the media is pushing us into, which is mixing refugees and migrants. Which is not the same at all. And if you as well mix these two together, then every time you rightfully object to one, you’ll be treated as someone rejecting the other.

Many thanks. I was in Macedonia during the 2015 and tried to offer basic help (water and so on to migrants) even though I deeply disagree with illegal migration. Because there were very dangerous people among them which were angry that anyone was accepting anything from ‘the christians’ we had to pull stop. I did not physically hand over the water etc. But I was put of the church group that did and there was no prosyletizing or anything at all. But some people wore tshirts with the church name on them. Since then, I believe this was a catastrophic failure of the EU and they have, in the words of a leader of Isis,. ‘Thrown open the doors of their fortress before the lions of their forces inviting their enemy in’. Though they would have it that this was divine intervention, it certainly encouraged attack, is destroying western nations and has begun a process which could yet end western democracy over time. I used to believe that we all had the same basic ambitions as human beings. I now know that this is not true of fanatics which follow the doctrine exactly as it is written. People led byfollowing a totalitarian ideology with that much violence and hatred in it would set the world back to a medievel level of social and cultural development unwinding hard won progress over hundreds of years. This should be an interesting listen. Many thanks.
