  Aah! Good old British traditions, like serfdom, Droit de Seigneur, eating nettles, workhouses,ravishing tweenies, the Grand Old Dirty Duke of York, the Press Gangs, hanging, flogging and branding, children in mines, factories, and up chimneys, a time when everyone knew their place, apart from the revolting peasants.

  And since when was Putin anything to do with socialism? His “special military operation” in Ukraine is based on returning to Russia’s glorious past when the boyars ruled Kievan Rus and the Tsar was emperor of ALL the Russias!

  This one’s outside my jurisdiction, e. How other states wish to structure their social hierarchies & all that. Whether they insist upon having Queens, lords, dragons, wizards, ents, etc. Good for them, I say. It’s just when they travel around the world, bringing their racism & Brutish imperialism that things start 2 get iffy. Keep it @ home & in yer trousers, say I.

  What a load of horsesh*t.

  Labour politicians are clearly your bogeymen and the two reasons you seem to cite are:

  1. Dumping tradition

  2. Turining Britain into Putin’s playground

  Well, firstly the British government of the past 3 years is the one that has dumped tradition, to the extent where one of the traditions you seem to love - the unwritten constitution - is in tatters and the very existence of the United Kingdom is in doubt more than it has been since its earliest days.

  Secondly, as for turning Britain into Putin’s playground …. you can’t be serious? It already is thanks to Bunter and his predecessors sucking up to the oligarchs.

  @caesar, you’re a lot nicer than I am. Now, it has always been my stated policy to never judge another person. But I developed a caveat to this rule at the ripe age of six when, one sunny morn, I ventured forth from my bed, walked down the stairs and into our attached workshop to retrieve some apple juice. And what should I find? A drunk man sitting on my apple juice flats and drinking it all! Well, being a sensible six year old I asked him to vacate the premises forthwith and to cease his illicit consumption of my apple juice and you know what he said? He said he lived there, it was his apple juice and I ought to get out instead. You should be noticing some parallels to the British Empire at this juncture.

  Well, I fetched my parents forthwith, it took a bit of convincing to get them out of bed at 6am, but I eventually did, now do you suppose I was polite in my description of this apple juice thief? To the contrary! I described him as a drunken piss covered lout and juice fiend of poor breeding and worse character.

  Because he lost the right to privacy in his personal affairs when he broke into my home and stole my apple juice. In the same way, I would argue, that the British lost their right to uncommented upon self government when they invaded everyone who didn’t already have a flag (and a number who did.) So, while it is certainly your prerogative to respect British self-government, I feel that you really don’t have to when they’ve spent the last millennia sitting atop your country drinking all its apple juice and smelling of wee.

  My parents locked the door after that. A policy I strongly feel many former British colonies, protectorates, territories, etc might wish to consider going forward.

  Flawless logic, as ever. I hadn’t fully considered the global dimensions of the juice lemma (or the lemma juice, ftm). As Groucho said, turn off the juice before I get electrocuted.
  Might be prudent to go easy on the Brits, given that they’re currently in their season finale, and the ratings/reviews are appalling.
