The highly anticipated portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, by the prize-winning, bestselling author of Say Nothing
The Sackler name adorns the walls of many storied institutions: Harvard, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Oxford, the Louvre. They are one of the richest families in the world, known for their lavish donations to the arts and sciences. The source of the family fortune was vague, however, until it emerged that the Sacklers were responsible for making and marketing Oxycontin, a blockbuster painkiller that was a catalyst for the opioid crisis.
Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

@demogorgon666 THANKS SO SO MUCH!!! You totally made my day. Going to drop everything and start immersing myself in this masterfully investigating journalism. Also highly recommend “Say Nothing” by the same author.

Not expecting another Say Nothing. More akin Bad Blood not (yet) brought to justice. But not as outrageously evil, more like banal ethical corruption which results in many deaths. Really unsure how good this story will make, though an important one.

Not so banal. They knew & shrugged it off.
For every addict there’s a life time of family & friends who suffer too.
There’s a special place in hell for the Sacklers.

Many thanks! Does anyone also have Pain Killer by Barry Meier? Many thanks in advance…

You guys are clueless, plain and simple. Who clearly have never suffered from Chronic pain in your life or truly know what we go thru. I mean seriously?? You must also hold gun manufactures personally responsible for every gun death. Or automaker for every death involving a vehicle. What ever happened to personal responsibility? Must of conservatives, I know they dont believe in that anymore, its all about victimhood. Lets be honest here, no one thought Oxycontin was safer, NO ONE. The base compound Oxycodone had been around alot longer then the Sackler family was making OxyContin, and its effects are widely known. To put the opioid epidemic on them is just absolutely absurd. Maybe they are horrible people, i dont know, I will listen to the book. That doesn’t change the fact that to put any blame for the opioid situation on them is just delusional. The real opioid problem in America is that they are not prescribing ENOUGH, forcing people to go down dangerous paths of illegal and synthetic drugs. It’s absurdly delusional pass the blame folks, like in these comments, that have caused a situation where its almost impossible to get any sort of pain treatment anymore.
Pain was always undertreated, even during the alleged Oxycontin boom. If you could even find a doctor back then to prescribe opioids, it was at such a reduced dose that it didnt do a whole lot. This fear of opioids is a bigger cause of death then any actual misuse of prescription opioids. It certainly is the cause of alot more pain and suffering. The true amount of Oxy or any prescribed pain pill that is abused and diverted is ridiculously small and always was. But this rabid anti-opioid bs has made the situation 1000x worse. If it was hard to get treatment back then, its impossible now.
There was never any reason to fear prescription opioids, and there isnt now. The problem didnt come from them and it was only made worse by further restricting prescription. I hope you people who think you are fighting on some side of justice realize the pain and suffering your causing people.
The only time in my life I was able to lead a fairly normal life and do normal physical activities was around 2006-2009 when I had a doctor who wasnt afraid to buck the system and prescribe what was necessary for my pain, regardless of what people thought. And I lived a mostly pain free life that entire time. What do she get for it? She lost her license for prescribing too much to people (what do you expect, when you have a doctor willing to really help their pain patients and care more about them then what people think is an ‘appropriate’ amt, word gets around, you get alot of SEVERE pain patients, who need higher doses, of course they prescribe alot more pills then the average doctor dose). Its despicable what they did to her and other doctors who were not running ‘pill mills’, but legit clinics treating people with chronic pain.
You can blame the current opioid epidemic of the last decade+ not on the Sacklers, or oxy or any prescription opioid. You can blame it on the opioid backlash and the cracking down of pain management. Which was already undertreated if treated at all. Now, only the rare few or people literally end of life (and even then, the horror stories of the lack of pain relief they even give them these days…) get any opioids at all, and its extremely undertreated. They will use all sorts of less studied, more dangerous drugs, just because they are not opioids. And they rarely work. God forbid we give people a dose appropriate to the person, no, we gotta make up delusion dose limits as if all people are the same. Serious folks, learn something. Opioidphobia has to stop.

this guy sounds like a habitual oxycotin user thats rambling while high, trying to justify his habit.
get clean, ol’ buddy. nobody judges you. quite the contrary, im sure your family would be spared the grief of burying their own child because he didnt exercise enough “personal responsibility”
