The definitive biography of the most dangerous demagogue in American history, based on first-ever review of his personal and professional papers, medical and military records, and recently unsealed transcripts of his closed-door Congressional hearings
In the long history of American demagogues, from Huey Long to Donald Trump, never has one man caused so much damage in such a short time as Senator Joseph McCarthy. We still use “McCarthyism” to stand for outrageous charges of guilt by association, a weapon of polarizing slander. From 1950 to 1954, McCarthy destroyed many careers and even entire lives, whipping the nation into a frenzy of paranoia, accusation, loyalty oaths, and terror. When the public finally turned on him, he came crashing down, dying of alcoholism in 1957. Only now, through bestselling author Larry Tye’s exclusive look at the senator’s records, can the full story be told.
Demagogue is a masterful portrait of a human being capable of immense evil, yet beguiling charm. McCarthy was a tireless worker and a genuine war hero. His ambitions knew few limits. Neither did his socializing, his drinking, nor his gambling. When he finally made it to the Senate, he flailed around in search of an agenda and angered many with his sharp elbows and lack of integrity. Finally, after three years, he hit upon anti-communism. By recklessly charging treason against everyone from George Marshall to much of the State Department, he became the most influential and controversial man in America. His chaotic, meteoric rise is a gripping and terrifying object lesson for us all. Yet his equally sudden fall from fame offers reason for hope that, given the rope, most American demagogues eventually hang themselves.

Joe McCarthy’s reputation as a ‘genuine war hero’ was debunked during his actual political heyday (most of his combat action was against palm trees).
Evangelicals didn’t want to hear it then, and they have spent most of the last seventy years trying to pretend it wasn’t true.
It’s always worth being reminded just how easy it is to destroy a democracy though, so thanks for the posting.

Read Blacklisted by History by M. Stanton Evans.
Tye’s book merely propagates the Left’s narrative. Poorly researched, relies on sensationalism, and merely does what he is told.
In his other books, Tye kisses Obama’s ass and is goo goo eyes over RFK. Typical of his class

Of course I had forgotten that Stanton Evans makes a fair case that America’s real enemy in WWII was in fact the palm trees which Joe McCarthy neutralized.
I don’t believe it myself of course; but some folk do.

Wow, what a brave and original take on this topic!
As bad a reputation as this guy has. I can’t today, find anything he was actually wrong about. Not to mention that he had nothing to do with the actual backlisting of individuals outside of government nor and I’m not sure what you think his role was in the “guilt by association” that resulted from the revelations. Almost every accusation of communism turned out to be substantiated later. And though much would not come out until after he was out of office, McCarthy was spot-on and those accusations that we hear so much about, all largely turned out to be completely true. It is one thing for a single author to wrongly accuse him of things he never technically did and these are things that are easy to look it up and establish. It’s worrisome and sad when that same error of attribution is repeated over and over for more than half a century.
He didn’t have the most endearing personality to be sure.
There is nothing more dangerous and harmful than communists and marxists. McCarthy is an American Hero

Joe McCarthy is the best friend of China! The top scientist Qian Xuesen couldn’t have returned China in 1950’s without Joe McCarthy’s persecution.

Keep in mind that apollo60 thinks that Time in the 1930s was a “left” magazine that praised Hitler (both wrong).
The research is, in fact, first-class and does quite a lot to humanise McCarthy rather than demonise him. It does, I admit, needlessly bring Trump into some comparisons.
But I suspect some people who clutch their pearls and blame everything on ‘the Left’ haven’t read half the books they claim to on here.

If you look at the long arc of human history you see the slow steady movement toward the left and a more liberal and progressive society. Authoritarianism is evil be it left, right or center.

Why are there more Communists in the US now then ever before, occupying really influential positions in education, politics and commerce if Joe was wrong? In fact the Demoncrap party is mostly composed of radical communists.

AlunS, others:
How’s it feel knowing the “demoncrap” party has won the popular vote every single national election in the past 30 years with the singular exception of 2004? How’d it feel to lose the popular (but not electoral) vote in 2016 by nearly 3 million? Then we doubled up on that margin and owned you in 2020 by 7 million. Followed by an epic collapse of your “red wave” in 2022 and historic special election wins across the board for us despite being the party in power (usually that means we should be losing)?
You mad?
Owned. Get used to it. :)
January 19th, 2024
how does it feel to Not win the popular vote?
Are you serious?
How stupid are you wishfire2?
Give us a ballpark—ya know what, don’t hurt yourself.
Let’s just give you the double digit. (No one will ask where in the tens place)
Look at a map of the population: When you give away free things, un-smart people tend to congregate. Those same people tend to vote for the people who will continue to give away free things.
(I feel like that explains more than half of all democrat voters anyway)
Now, Look up how much of a local population is contributes to GDP.
I don’t know, Maybe take a night class
