I’ve always like the public personna of Michelle Obama. Very likable. But look closley at the cover art for her new book.
The racist media gurus have air-brushed the face of the first lady to be very subtly lighter then her natural skin tone in order that the book’s cover will appeal to white buyers.

The skin cream company, Loreal, did that with Beyoncé’s skin tone in their advertising campaigns. And of course Michael Jackson did it to himself. There’s a culturally oppressive standard of beauty which pressurises people to alter their appearance. It’s evidenced in hair-straightening (Malcolm X wrote about the conking procedure where hot lye was applied to the hair, severely burning the scalp); and amongst women of Persian ethnic heritage, fuller noses are surgically altered to give them a more Caucasian aspect.
The concept of an ideal paradigm which everyone should aspire to is indeed thoroughly racist. We are required to reach a stage of homogeneous blandness, with any difference eliminated.
Powerful role models should resist efforts to “idealise” their images, which would in turn generate confidence in their followers.
Beauty is variegated.

@mklangelo - On a wider level, these impulses are more than skin-deep. People want to “fit in” and to be accepted. It’s a class/elite thing as well; the middle classes always emulated their “betters” and were despised for it in turn. People look at some bogus dominant group and want to be a part of it, close to it or be recognised by it - regardless of the cant about diversity and tolerance. Forget what people say, it’s all about what they do, that’s what reveals them.
Amongst East Asians, there’s a phenomenon of having surgery to widen their eyes!
I think it’s evidence of a profound malaise within people and cultures. People are conditioned to despise themselves. The superficial rules over essence.
I always thought Michelle Obama was beautiful, and we can’t really know what goes on behind the veil.

@caesar963 I understand that we have a undertow of insecurity as humans. We are social beings and look to each other. The comparisons we make are made in order that we define ourselves to ourselves. This is true whether or not we are aware of it.
But this woman is not someone I can see signing off on this preposterous charade for any reason. Who does Michelle Obama aspire to be? She is a former First Lady that is very well regarded. A class act.
