A gripping short biography of the extraordinary Alfred Hitchock, the master of suspense.
Alfred Hitchcock was a strange child. Fat, lonely, burning with fear and ambition, his childhood was an isolated one, scented with fish from his father’s shop. Afraid to leave his bedroom, he would plan great voyages, using railway timetables to plot an exact imaginary route across Europe. So how did this fearful figure become one of the most respected film directors of the 20th century?
As an adult Hitch rigorously controlled the press’ portrait of him, drawing certain carefully selected childhood anecdotes into full focus and blurring all others out. In this quick-witted portrait, Ackroyd reveals something more: a lugubriously jolly man fond of practical jokes, who smashes a once-used teacup every morning to remind himself of the frailty of life. Iconic film stars make cameo appearances, just as Hitch did in his own films: Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, and James Stewart despair of his detached directing style, and, perhaps most famously of all, Tippi Hedren endures cuts and bruises from a real-life fearsome flock of birds.
Alfred Hitchcock wrests the director’s chair back from the master of control and discovers what lurks just out of sight, in the corner of the shot.

Alfred loved the Birds.

You’re welcome!
Hey, ceasar963, I saw a comment you made about King Sorrow being similar to The Secret History. How did you mean? Similar storyline? I haven’t read King Sorrow yet.

Hi Benjy, I thought the descriptions sounded similar - exclusive school, college kids messing with dangerous forces (”dark academia?”). I think the author intended it though, from what I can see. Thx again for the books.

Hey, caesar, thanks for seeing my message and writing me back. Yeah, I thought it sounded similar, too, but I was wondering if it was even more than it seemed on the surface. The Secret History is still in my top ten favorite books. I’m going to give King Sorrow a shot and see how it works out. You’re welcome — for the books.

The similarity is exactly what attracted me to the Hill book (never read one of his before - I haven’t even finished one of his dad’s bks since the great Pet Sematary, 1980-something - the cat came back wrong, so wrong…).
Tartt’s bk is certainly top 10. I’m only a little ways into this one, so probably have to manage expectations. I think it’s longer than Tartt’s.
Also, he tips the hat with a “Donna” character.
(And why is it always the 1980s in these things?)

King Sorrow is definitely a longer page count. The
Secret History was 500-something pages. I read Joe Hill’s Nosferatu book, and I thought it was decent. There have been a lot of dark academia books that have tried to be The Secret History, but I’ve never read anything that came close. I’m going to be giving this one a shot soon.

Hitch was a prankster. He pulled weird pranks on actors and friends, often quite offensive pranks that made people very uncomfortable. He didn’t hesitate in telling even the most famous actors exactly what he thought of them and their acting performances when under his direction.
