Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Mike was instead put to work swabbing the decks.
Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission, swiftly rising through the ranks. In the 1980s, Rinder became Scientology’s international spokesperson and the head of its powerful Office of Special Affairs. He helped negotiate Scientology’s pivotal tax exemption from the IRS and engaged with the organization’s prominent celebrity members, including Tom Cruise, Lisa Marie Presley, and John Travolta.
Yet Rinder couldn’t shake a nagging feeling that something was amiss—Hubbard’s promises remained unfulfilled at his death, and his successor, David Miscavige, was a ruthless and vindictive man who did not hesitate to confine many top Scientologists, Mike among them, to a makeshift prison known as the Hole.
In 2007, at the age of fifty-two, Rinder finally escaped Scientology. Overnight, he became one of the organization’s biggest public enemies. He was followed, hacked, spied on, and tracked. But he refused to be intimidated and today helps people break free of Scientology.
In A Billion Years, the dark, dystopian truth about Scientology is revealed as never before. Rinder offers insights into the religion that only someone of his former high rank could provide and tells a harrowing but fulfilling story of personal resilience.

Back in the day, we might refer to a billion-year contract as being “somewhat onerous” in its terms.
July 30th, 2023
Quite so.
“Inadequate consideration,” “adhesion,” “undue influence” and “contrary to public policy” might also appear in the pleading.
Apparently this is the contract: https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Library/Shelf/wakefield/us-09.html
I wonder if Scientology sues the estates of deceased members demanding specific performance following their deaths.
I’d probably argue in the alternative that it was a valid employment contract. And, since all employment contracts not in managerial roles must pay at least minimum wage Mr. Rinder must receive that amount. But, due to the court system’s inability to monitor the working conditions of disembodied spirits, and given Scientology’s bad faith failure to pay Mr. Rinder with any consistency to date, and the inability of spirits to file NLRB complaints or initiate contract disputes, as an act of judicial oversight all legally owed wages for the complete contract term which would accrue to Mr. Rinder following his death over the remaining approximately 9.999.999.900 years should be placed in trust today, that it may be verified and overseen by the court, thereby providing Mr Rinder and any spiritual offspring he may have, the full protection of the US legal system for the duration of his epochs long employment term.
I’d further note that we understand Scientology may have some minor difficulty transferring the paltry pay of one minimum wage employee for one contract term to a trust account, given their past conduct, so we propose an ample time period of not more than 30 days to transfer funds in the amount of 14,999,998,500,000 USD to said trust, which we view as the minimum acceptable compensation based on present wage laws. Indeed, and contrary to counsel’s advice, Mr. Rinder is being quite generous with this offer, as it does not account for inflationary pressures or increases to the prevailing minimum wage over time. Mr. Rinder simply wishes to put this unpleasant dispute behind him and, for that reason, has chosen to forego much of his just compensation that he might resume work as a humble deckhand trillionare as soon as practicable.
They’d argue international waters, I’d argue violation of the original terms of employment and ask the judge to hold them to the original terms of the contract so as not to reward bad behavior. Kinda wish someone did that. I doubt it’d survive summary judgement but it’d be a fun case to read if it did.

When christianity was a new religion, it was talked about the same way scientology is talked about today. The longer your cult exists, the more likely it will be accepted as a religion. Religions are nothing more than old cults.

Oh, don’t be such an old cult, makin’ stuff up to beat the band.
@erouting - Indeed so, but given that this MacSavage character seems to have his very own prison Hole on hand, the suit might go down an abyss. Rinder’s spirited case wouldn’t have a ghost of a chance.
I didn’t know that poor ol’ Lisa Marie had been in the maw of the scienticians’ clutches.

Spot on koloko. Joseph Smith was born just far enough back that some take him seriously but even apart from the craziness of Hubbard he existed in the modern age and it is far more difficult to pass him off as credible. Had Jesus been a US citizen born in the last 150 years he’d be just a footnote in history at best.

News today that Mike has passed away. Rest in peace and thanks for all the works you’ve done over the years to expose this horrible cult.

Mike’s first remembrance is coming up in a few days. I feel deeply about that. His activism after he left scn played a big part of me leaving. Yes, I’m a survivor. I’ve been here for a long while, every now and then downloading Audio Books that interested me and sharing them. This one, however, I refrained from. Because it’s personal. I was however, gifted an audible version of this book for christmas this year. And I have now downloaded the free to listen to version. Which I will reshare once. Mike has left behind 3 beautiful souls, his wife, a step-kid, and his kid, that was born after he left the c.lt. There is still family of him remaining in to this day. If anyone deserves to be supported, even after death… this is one of them.
